The Melody Character Thread

Plot

The mansion on the edge of the little known town of Sussex has long been abandoned. It was supposed to be rotted and decayed. Left on its own, no one has lived there for at least 50 years now, if not longer. However, one day eight strangers are brought to this house out of no where. Drawn from their lives forcefully by a song that won’t stop playing in their head unless they are on the grounds of this mansion. When anyone from outside attempts to enter, they experience an immense pain that cannot be stopped.

Curiously, in the house there are eight rooms, all setup for the people who arrive there. These people all being between the ages of 18 and 24. Leaving the house, causes the melody to resume. So it become evident they are trapped. While the media covers this unique situation from the outside, it seems there is to be no rescue. While some may attempt to leave, it becomes clear that the melody will drive them insane if they attempt to stay out for too long.

The house provides food for the eight strangers, but no one knows how or why. Eventually, odd powers begin to emerge in each stranger, but it seems, they might need to discover what is wrong with this house, or be trapped here for ever.

Character Name: Gabriel Sinclaire
Age: 21
Backstory: Raised in a non-religious household with no mother, Gabriel didn’t get his cool looks from being babied. His father worked a full-time job at the garage, while Gabriel was growing up, leaving him in day cares to be raised amongst other kids. Rather than have an even temperament, he learned to keep to himself, and enjoy his private time.

Gabriel invested his time listening to music, but rather than play music, he just ended up turning into your typical burn out who smoked on the weekends, and worked a part-time job as a barista in-between partying. He dropped out of high school, and didn’t expect to do much of anything with his life.

He spends most of his time hanging out with his best friend, and sneaking into concerts rather than paying the full price. Despite the fact that he is poor as dirty, and basically living on his father’s job at the garage, and still hasn’t moved out of his father’s house, he has a mentality like he is better than others around him.

Despite his tough guy persona, he has never invested the time to weight lifting, and is kind of a wimp. He can’t throw a punch nor take one. His biggest solace of being such a jerk is that he avoids people most of the time and they never have cause to realize he is the living embodiment of snot.

While Gabriel doesn’t really lean one way or the other on the romantic scale, he tends to favor the ladies, however, much like being unable to hold a steady job, he can’t hold onto a girlfriend either. He lacks skills both in the workforce and in social graces and therefore is the type of guy to text you at 2 in the morning asking if you up.

Character Name: Lucian Sapia
Age: 20
Backstory: Lucian was born into a family that was always travelling because of his father’s job, meaning he was always going from school to school and making new friends every year. By the time he was eight, however, he realised there was no point in making friends, as after a year he would lose contact with them. This caused Lucian to become lonely.

As a way to stop feeling so lonely, Lucian began to read a lot and saw many of the book characters as his real-life friends. This gave him a very strange personality. Another thing that caused his strange personality was his mum.

Lucian’s mum was almost as strange as Lucian, she had very weird ways of doing things and odd beliefs. She told Lucian her beliefs through her actions and telling him stories when he was younger. Lucian uses his mother’s sayings a lot and tries to copy how she does things as well.

Lucian also had a brother, his brother was five years older than him and left the household as soon as possible. His brother had always hated living with the family and when he left, the family was a lot happier due to not having him moaning every second of every day. Lucian had never got along with his brother and often found himself being bullied by him.

When Lucian was 15, he stumbled across the steampunk genre of books and was immediately fascinated by it. He fell so in love with the genre, that he changed his lifestyle to be just that little bit closer to it. This put many off talking to him, however, he didn’t care. In fact, he even began wearing steampunk styled clothing.

Lucian’s obsession with steampunk didn’t last for long though, he soon found himself getting bullied, however that wasn’t the main cause. The main cause had been his dad… His dad had told him to stop being so strange and to start trying to make friends instead of simply ignoring people.
Lucian still enjoyed steampunk after that, yet he wasn’t as obsessed.

When Lucian was 17, his dad changed job and finally, the family settled down in the town of Sussex. Lucian was happy with this and decided he would try and make a few friends as his father told him to. He failed and found that almost nobody was like him and nobody wanted to talk to him. So, he carried on like before, reading a lot, wearing odd clothes and generally being a strange person.

In Sussex, he did make one friend for a small period of time. They had got along, however, Lucian became too clingy due to not having any other friends. He also wasn’t very good at socialising with his friend’s friends and made it awkward for everyone talking to him. In the end, Lucian’s friend told him they didn’t want to hang out anymore. Lucian had blamed this on his odd clothing and immediately stopped wearing and put on normal clothing, trying to fit in

He later found himself with a new group of people and stuck around with them for a bit, however, he was always silent and never spoke a word. That was what he was told to do. All his new friends did, was talk about sports and fighting. Two things Lucian couldn’t do. Yet, he didn’t care as long as was with people.

One day, one of his new friends got into a fight with another person in an alleyway. Lucian didn’t like it and wanted to stop it, however, he didn’t try to and simply watched. When the fight was other, his friend asked him why he didn’t help fight, Lucian had told him that it wasn’t his fight. This had ended in him getting left by another group of people.

When he was 18, he made another group of friends and in this group, he could talk, however, that wasn’t for the better. Lucian would always reference his books, the type of books that almost nobody had read but him. He also got too confident and became quite annoying, however, the group still let him stay.

A year later, he still talked with these people, every day getting more confident, every day becoming more annoying, strange and odd. Lucian didn’t realise though until he was told, he didn’t like what he heard and simply left.

Character Name: Amanda Davis
Age: 20
Backstory: Born to a single mother alongside three brothers, her family was tight on money, but it was happy. When she was young, her older brothers often looked after her whenever her mom was busy working, and when she grew older, she did the same for her younger brother. She eventually became used to caring for others and became increasingly more self-reliant.

Having grown up in a family that struggled from time to time, she learned that those who don’t pull their own weights become a burden, and she promised herself from an early age she wouldn’t be like that. She often feels the need to be needed by other people, wanting others to be able to depend on her; to an extent, she also feels like she has to be right most of the time and firmly believes that her way is the best way. She tries to be kind and sensitive but can have quite the mouth on her at times, which can get her into trouble.

From a young age, she was fascinated by science and pursued it eagerly, taking advanced classes at school in order to turn what she loved into a career. When she was in high school, she decided she would want to be a doctor, since her calling was helping people and she could use science to do so. She finally got into college and pursued her career even more determinedly than before; she practically never left her room save to go to class, neglected food and drink for the most part (save for coffee, to which she is now addicted), and barely slept, all in an effort to soak up as much as she could and to do as well as she could.

She eventually realized this was not the way to go about her life and decided to start caring for herself more, going to see movies and doing little things for herself, but she still neglects self-care from time to time for things she deems more important and often forgets she has human limitations. She has trouble admitting when she’s wrong, and she can often come across as “high-and-mighty.”

When she’s not studying, she’s checking in on her family to make sure they’re doing alright or (secretly) watching rom-coms in her dorm because she doesn’t want to admit it, but she secretly wants the kind of romance in movies to happen to her in real life.

Backstory: Like everyone else in her family, she was expected to move out on her 18th birthday. Unlike everyone else, she counted down the days until it had happened. Her relatives always lectured her on how she’d never been able to ‘survive’ in the real world. Sometimes, she even gave into their beliefs, but she remained persistent. There was nothing that she valued more over peace and quiet. She never got time alone to herself, when she truly felt like she had a place in the world. She never understood why her family dreaded to live with one another while never being able to tolerate the very same people.

Often they would remain downstairs in the kitchen saying things to one another that would have much better left unspoken. Every evening when her entire family was home, Dominika would question herself How can I be related to these godforsaken people? As these typical evenings appeared to be a family tradition, of course, they wanted her involved as well. Most of the time, Dominika would shelter her sanity by listening to music by herself in her room. She didn’t want any involvement with them.

During these moments, her siblings would parade into her room chanting insulting slurs on how she was a waste because she never stood up for herself- which came across as alien to them. Even her mother would call her weak and a waste of her time. It was during these times she wished she could disappear into thin air, never having to hear what a disappointment she was ever again. It took her family to physically drag her from where she was for her to tell them to stop. Hence the fingernail scratches against her door frame.

The day prior to her birthday, she had already packed her essentials. As soon as her clock struck 12, she picked up her school bag in one arm and a train ticket along with a few 20 dollar bills in the other, clenched tight to her chest. She took off to the nearest bus stop and never looked back. Since then, she never heard from them. To her, this was too good to be true. Living on her own was terrifying, as nothing could have prepared her for it, but she made the best of what she had. She took things a day at a time, and after months of talking to a few people, for the first time in her life she made a few friends as well.

As nothing good could ever last, she lost her friends only a week after all moving in together. To Dominika, the group that they formed was the closest she ever had to an actual family and she was too clingy to them. She depended on them for everything, even on matters that people never talk about as normally wouldn’t be deemed as socially acceptable. She spent the rest of that month looking for a new home to live in. It was then she decided to never fully trust anyone ever again, she would have never agreed on living with them if she didn’t truly believe she would spend the rest of her life living with them.

Backstory: She had always been a part of the ‘popular clique.’ Always, annoyed with her parents because they ignored her every single day, and barely knew anything about her. They usually came home late, about 11:00pm, drunk.

She hated that the didn’t care about her, and thats why she started to make fun of people. Inside, she knew it was wrong, but still did it. It always helped her make her feel better about herself. She loved to be full of power, and she loved to have other people feel what she suffered.

In high school, she had lost a lot of friends, and ended up eating her lunches alone and spending her time after school alone, in her bedroom, watching television.

Her family had started to lose money, even though they had started out being wealthy. Her parents had spent a ton of money on alcohol. She couldn’t afford the expensive clothing she bought, she couldn’t afford the trips the schools made, and worst of all she developed more anger, due to peers making fun of her.

She, again, took her anger out on everyone, and the more ‘popular’ people accepted her again. At 15, she had gained more friends, and had started to feel happy again. She had things to do after school and she would never be spotted alone.

Character Name: Rose Foster
Age: 18
Backstory: Rose was that girl you never remembered. She spent most her time with her nose in books or her head in the clouds, preferring fantasy over reality. It wasn’t that her life was bad it was more bland than anything. Routine was something her mother instilled in her at a young age and she hated it. Everything was planned from the moment she woke up till the minute she climbed into bed.

Her mother was a wedding planner and spent most of her time planning , networking … controlling. It was lucky for Rose when she would get those rare afternoon weddings which would cause her mother to be out for half the night. It was the one section of her life that rose could guarantee she got to do what she wanted without being constantly under her mothers thumb. Thankfully she was done with high school now and recently applied to a slew of colleges out of state hoping that one of them would take her away.

In the meantime when she got free of her mother she would climb out her windows to avoid being see by neighbors and head to the woods . She was never really sure why her mother was so highly paranoid and anytime Rose questioned it her mother would go off on a tangent, eventually silence was better. When the subject of her father came up she would do the same.

The woods held comfort for Rose and she often found herself leaning against a tree watching the squirrels bicker back and forth. Nature was always changing and adapting marked with unpredictability and she craved that. On those special nights while her mother was away she would fumble around the woods for hours. Whether it was fighting off a pretend dragon with a stick or rescuing small tadpoles from a puddle of water she was truly happy.

Friends were a luxury and something she didn’t have. People were so focused on the next thing and moving through life with a purpose while rose just wanted to enjoy it. She was so used to just being left behind as the friends she did have always moved on to bigger and better things. So she kept to herself and stayed in the sidelines choosing to listen rather than make noise.

Character Name: Christopher Thomson
Age: 18
Backstory: In the beginning, he was popular. Crowds followed him as he walked down the street flexing his muscles. If anyone in the crowd was foolish enough to challenge Christopher to a ‘friendly’ fight, Christopher would put on a show, beating his opponent up until they had to cry for mercy. Then he’d go to the gym and work out for the rest of the day, ignoring mounds of homework piling up on his desk.

School was the same. Every day he would be flocked by people on his way to classes, and he loved it. He usually slept in classes, and the teachers gave up trying to teach him anything. Except he always stayed awake during math. Not to pay attention to the teacher, of course, but a girl named Christine. To him, she was the most beautiful girl in the world, and he was upset that he only saw her in math.

After school one day, during his routine parade through the streets, he was challenged by someone he did not expect. Katherine pushed her way through the crowd and faced him. She furrowed her eyesbrows in concentration and lifted her fists. Christopher could only watch helplessly. Backing out would be one thing, but beating up a girl would be a whole other. He was so caught up in his thoughts that he missed the self-pronounced referee blow his whistle to start the fight, so there was nothing he could do when Katherine punched him square in the jaw. He staggered backwards, and the crowd went crazy. Katherine closed the distance between them and backed him into the wall. Christopher’s only option was to surrender if he didn’t want to have any lasting bruises, so he did. All around him, the people who supported him a few moments ago began to laugh. He walked home with his head down.

When he got home, he stomped past his mother in the kitchen, and into his room. He punched his pillow in anger, and threw books at his bedroom wall. It took him hours to calm down. Once he finally did, he made a vow to never fight anyone for fun again. He also learned to never, ever trust anyone ever again, because he knew they’d end up stabbing him in the back, like how all of the people who admired him. He tried playing sports to occupy his time, but he had never really found them fun. After months of having way too much free time, and nothing to do to occupy it, he picked up his first book, and it was life changing. He sat on his bed for hours, absorbed in the world that the book brought him too.

Christopher found that if he payed attention, he actually enjoyed school, and when he brought back his first A+ of the year to his mother, she actually cried. Christopher is an only child, and his father died when he was only two years old. His mother is a good lawyer, so they aren’t really in any financial trouble.
